What is PDF?

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. It is a popular way of formatting documents so they can be viewed and printed on different computers.

Many of the documents and forms on this site are created as PDFs.

To view a PDF file you will need Adobe Reader software on your computer.

Find information about Adobe Reader and download the latest version on the Adobe website.

PDF error

Portable Document Format (PDF) is a popular way of formatting documents so they can be viewed and printed on different computers.

Many of the documents and forms on mygov.scot are PDFs. You can also convert our guides to PDF format in order to print them.

Sometimes a PDF file is reported as being damaged and cannot be opened. If this happens:

  • avoid creating PDFs from guides that contain lists of links organised alphabetically
  • if you are creating a PDF out of more than one guide, try omitting guides with the alphabetical link lists

Look out for fake emails from legitimate organisations

Everyone using email and the internet should be aware that there are criminals online who are looking to make a profit from you.

One popular way is the use of fake emails and websites designed to look like the real thing, that ask you for private information e.g. private financial information like your bank account details, which the people collecting the information can exploit. This is known as phishing.

Phishing emails and websites can often look convincing but there are common signs that they may be fake, such as:

  • Poor design or bad spelling
  • Unusual looking email or web addresses
  • The content tells you something is 'urgent' or 'too good to be true' for instance an unexpected tax refund
  • It asks you for private information or asks you to click on a link that takes you to a website that asks for personal financial information like your bank account details.

If you are in doubt about any email or weblink you have received you should check with the person or company the email is supposed to have come from first and until then avoid clicking on any links or providing any information.

If you think you have given your financial details to a fraudster you should advise your bank as soon as possible.

Business Gateway and government departments or financial institutions may send you emails from time to time but would never ask for security, financial or log in details or other private information or direct you to a website that does.
