About the business
When Claire Graham struggled to secure a job in a local hairdresser, she knew it was the right time to take the steps to turn her dreams into reality. Launched this month, Hair at Your Venue is a mobile hairdresser that operates entirely from the back of a lorry. The vehicle interior has been completely transformed into a fully functioning salon, complete with; a backwash unit, hot water, electricity, and a seating area for up to eight people.
Claire Graham, the business owner, said: “Initially, I was nervous to approach Business Gateway as the entire business concept was out of my comfort zone. I approached my local office in Falkirk and met with my advisor Steve Land. We clicked instantly, and he made me feel at ease."
My experience with Business Gateway has been invaluable. To be honest, I’m amazed at the quality and variety of workshops available for entrepreneurs, and it gets better – they are free of charge! It’s great to know that as my business grows I have a dedicated adviser who is there to provide advice and support.
How Business Gateway has helped
The missing piece in Claire’s business plan was the all-important matter of funding. Her Business Gateway Advisor signposted her to a loan provider which enabled her to purchase the 7.5-tonne truck that she has transform into her mobile salon. The truck travels to wedding venues and events across the country.
Steve Land, Business Adviser at Business Gateway, said: “I’ve had several meetings with Claire and I could feel her drive and passion to make Hair at Your Venue work. The business is like no other, it really offers that ‘wow’ factor and the uniqueness of its offering separates Claire from other mobile hair and beauty competitors.
“The best part of working at Business Gateway is seeing someone come to us with an exciting business idea, and with our support and expertise, they’re able to develop their business plan. It’s very encouraging to find out that Claire has had interest from clients in England and Wales and we will continue to provide support as required.”

Claire continued: “Earlier this year I was encouraged to enter THEHEAT19; a competition run by Business Gateway. I presented a three-minute pitch to a panel of five judges. The competition attracted 30 applications and I was awarded fourth place. As this is my first self-employed venture the award has given me a boost in confidence. This, coupled with ongoing support and advice from Business Gateway, makes for an exciting future.”
With six weddings already booked for 2019, Claire plans to grow the business and recruit a make-up artist and barber, making Hair at Your Venue a one-stop shop.
