About the business
Founded in 2014 by local resident Lynn Johnston, Cake Fridge began with a 24/7 honesty box at her home, Hayfield Croft House. Located on a single-track road between Voe and Aith, the cake fridge was an instant hit and has now become a Shetland institution, attracting visitors from far and wide.
From assistance in achieving grant funding to utilising a variety of start-up support services, Business Gateway has been invaluable in driving my business forward.
How Business Gateway has helped
In 2017, due to growing demand, Lynn approached Business Gateway Shetland with plans to convert Hayfield Croft into a tearoom to run alongside the Cake Fridge. Subsequently, Business Gateway supported a successful application to Shetland Islands Council’s Economic Development Service and secured a funding grant of £24,500. From there, Lynn worked with her adviser, Diane to register the business as a limited company and realise her dream of converting the croft into a tearoom offering everything from cakes and snacks to tourist information.
Lynn Johnson, business owner, continued: “I love people and I love baking, but the world of business was extremely daunting for me. I wanted to open a café that made people feel like they were at home and Business Gateway gave me the confidence to do just that.
“The Business Gateway marketing and advertising workshops were hugely effective when it came to raising awareness of my business and promoting Cake Fridge on social media. It’s been fantastic to watch Cake Fridge grow to become an island house-hold name whilst supporting local workers and the Shetland community.”
